How do bridges work?

A dental bridge is a dental appliance that usually consists of two dental crowns which fit on adjacent teeth on either side of a missing teeth gap. Between the two dental crowns is a false tooth (or teeth) which fills the missing tooth gap. Hence, in essence, a dental bridge basically bridges the gap created by a missing tooth and replaces the gap of the missing tooth with a false tooth. Since there are various types of dental bridges available, the specific type which a person chooses primarily depends on factors like the condition of a patient’s smile, his or her cost affordability and the desired aesthetic results.

In general, a well-planned and fabricated dental bridge is known to last ten or more years. In fact, if bridges are taken care of well and proper hygiene is practiced and ensured, they can certainly last a lifetime.

Dental bridges offer many benefits to patients. First and foremost, a dental bridge does a significant job in restoring a patient’s smile. In addition, through the replacement of missing teeth, a dental bridge restores a patient’s capacity to effectively chew and speak. Since missing teeth can cause the shape of a patient’s face to alter with time, a dental bridge can also stop that process from taking place.

Patients who have dental bridges in their mouth need to adhere to special oral hygiene practices to maintain good dental health. They must not only brush the dental bridge located area similar to natural teeth but also floss below and beneath the bridge and between the bridge and gum tissue. Flossing can normally be done by using a floss thread or floss aid. It looks like a flexible sewing needle which helps to get the thread underneath the bridge so that proper flossing can be done between the bridge and gum tissue.
