Dental crowns are an effective way to provide stability, functionality, and aesthetics to the tooth structure that may have been compromised due to any number of reasons. For the anterior (front) teeth that are visible from outside, porcelain crowns are preferred in order to maintain the aesthetic appearance. For the posterior teeth, many patients prefer porcelain over gold crowns. Good quality porcelain crowns will last for many years, but the crown may require replacement due to various factors. Sometimes the original crown may get damaged due to an accident or injury, requiring a replacement crown.

The original crown may develop cracks or fractures even without any severe trauma. However, the crown may simply get worn out after withstanding biting, chewing, and grinding forces in the mouth for years. Porcelain is a very strong material, but eventually a porcelain crown may need to be replaced when it has outlived its service life. So the new crown that will be needed in its place is known as a replacement crown. Replacement crowns are important in order to maintain the same status of the teeth that existed with the original crowns.

Crowns are also typically used in cases where the tooth has undergone a root canal treatment. This treatment is invasive and the tooth structure is compromised because of the tooth decay or a fracture reaching up to the tooth nerve. So there is a possibility that the tooth that has been supported with a crown after a root canal may again develop infection if proper dental hygiene and regular dental exams are not maintained. Furthermore, in cases where the dental crown has been placed over a healthy tooth which was broken or chipped, the tooth may develop an infection in the root due to poor dental hygiene or other factors. That may necessitate a root canal treatment, requiring removal of the crown, and then using a replacement crown after the treatment is completed.
