Michigan Crowns - What are dental crowns made of?

Dental crowns can be made from various materials, depending on the patient’s needs and their budget considerations. The cheaper variety of dental crowns may be made out of plastic or non-precious and semi-precious metals. These materials cost less, but they may not provide a long lasting value to the patient. At the same time, metallic crowns may not be aesthetically pleasing for most patients. Non-precious and semi-precious metals tend to lose their shine after some time, and may give a dark appearance to the teeth. Plastic crowns may undergo more rapid wear and tear and lose their aesthetic value very quickly.

Porcelain crowns, porcelain fused with metal crowns, and gold crowns, are three key categories of dental crowns that provide most successful results. Porcelain is a very strong material that is most widely used for making crowns today. Porcelain technology has advanced greatly over the years and superior quality porcelain crowns are made now that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also provide excellent strength to the tooth structure. A porcelain crown is ideal for the front teeth, which are the most visible.

Some dentists also recommend porcelain fused with metal crowns in an attempt to combine the strength of metal with the aesthetics of porcelain. However, the strongest material available for dental crowns is gold. Gold crowns may last for a lifetime without any problem, as long as the oral health of the patient remains good. Gold is a highly biocompatible metal, so it is unlikely to cause a reaction or sensitivity problems for most patients. However, in aesthetic terms, gold is not the best choice, so this material is usually preferred for posterior teeth where the crown is not visible. Gold is relatively more expensive than other materials, so the patients may evaluate their options between porcelain and gold crowns.
