Dental veneers can be additive or reductive procedures. If the teeth are undersized in comparison to the rest of the mouth, it may require veneers to enlarge or lengthen the teeth. This is an additive procedure that does not require much tooth preparation. So in this procedure there is no need of temporary veneers in most cases. The first dental visit will involve evaluation of the teeth and determining the desired size for the affected teeth. Once the veneers have been customized in the lab, the patient will be called for a second visit and the veneers can be bonded during that visit. There is no requirement for temporary veneers in-between visits.
However, if the veneers are required to enhance the color of the teeth, and not to increase their size, it requires some amount of tooth reduction on the front surface. It is a slight tooth reduction in order to make space for the ultra thin porcelain veneers. This will ensure that once the veneers are applied, they do not appear out of place in comparison to the other natural teeth. Once the tooth reduction procedure is performed, the patient is usually provided with temporary veneers till the time the permanent porcelain veneers are returned from the lab. This is done so that the patient does not face any discomfort, tooth sensitivity, or embarassment during the intervening period.
Our cosmetic dentists at LaserDentalAssociates.com will make a decision on temporary veneers based on a case by case evaluation, but in 75 to 80 percent of the cases temporary veneers are used anyway, unless the tooth preparation is very insignificant. In our advanced dental office, we utilize the latest CEREC technology to eliminate the need for temporary veneers and cut down the patient’s dental visits. CEREC’s CAD/CAM technology is used to fabricate permanent porcelain veneers right in our office on the same day, instead of having them fabricated by the lab. So the patient can receive permanent porcelain veneers in a single dental appointment.
