How are teeth prepared for a veneer?

A dental veneer requires minimal tooth preparation, which must be ideally performed by one of our experienced cosmetic dentists at LaserDentalAssociates.com. It is a sensitive procedure and a skilled dentist can ensure that the adjacent healthy teeth and gums are not affected during the process. In most types of porcelain veneers, the tooth must be numbed with local anesthesia so that the patient does not feel any pain or tooth sensitivity during the preparation.

As a part of the preparation, the dentist will reduce the biting edge of the tooth by approximately one millimeter. Thereafter, he will reduce the outer surface and the sides of the tooth also by approximately one millimeter. This is done essentially to make space for the veneer to be placed in that prepared surface. So the thickness of the veneer should match with the amount of tooth reduction. This will ensure that the veneered tooth resembles the other healthy teeth, and the veneer will not be conspicuously noticeable.

In any case, the tooth preparation differs from case to case, depending on the treatment plan for each case. In some situations, minimal or no tooth preparation may be necessary. So the operating dentist will evaluate the condition of teeth and then decide the preparation process. Highly advanced and ultra thin qualities of porcelain veneers are also available, which require very little tooth preparation.

Once the affected teeth have been prepared, the dentist will take an impression of the teeth so that the veneers can be customized precisely in the dental lab. However, some advanced dental offices such as LaserDentalAssociates.com are using the latest CEREC CAD/CAM technology where a digital optical impression is taken for more precise measurements and the veneer is fabricated from a block of porcelain the same day in our office. This eliminates the need for temporary veneers and minimizes the hassle for the patient, who can receive permanent veneers the same day.
