Why dental care is important

Drs. Frank Rosner and Laura Pepa work closely with patients to educate them on the importance of maintaining their oral health with routine dental care. Preventative care is best. Instead of reactive care, which is only performed when a problem arises within the smile, preventative care is a proactive approach to the health of the smile. Proactive care requires patients to visit us on a regular basis, even when problems are not present. We encourage patients to book an appointment at least twice a year for a cleaning and examination. This ensures that the teeth are as clean as they can be, even for patients who routinely brush and floss their teeth every day. Additionally, it allows the dentist to take x-rays to monitor one’s oral health beyond where the eyes can see. X-rays are wonderful diagnostic tools, because they allow us to see inside of the smile. Decay, infection, and bone issues can be addressed with the use of x-rays, viewing what is happening beneath the gum line.

Reactive care is also much more expensive in the long-run than preventative dental care. This is because conditions are often in the later stages of development when a patient decides to seek assistance. Extensive damage may have already occurred, and to restore the smile, dentists may need to perform additional tasks. Conditions such as periodontal disease left untreated can cause patients to experience permanent loss of gum tissue, bone, or even natural teeth.

What conditions can occur in the smile?

The two primary conditions that a dentist will look for during routine dental examinations are periodontal disease and tooth decay.

  • Periodontal disease – also known as gum disease, periodontal disease can wreak havoc on the health of the smile. This condition is an infection that begins in the soft tissues and can spread and get worse without treatment. Periodontal disease needs to be addressed by a professional, and this may include treatments such as deep cleanings, antibiotics, and procedures such as scaling and root planing. Periodontal disease is diagnosed by the symptoms that develop, and a dentist can determine the stage the condition has reached by evaluating the smile during a routine appointment and measuring the pocket depth that develops between the gum tissue and the natural tooth. This is an area where bacteria can build and worsen the infection.
  • Tooth decay – also known as cavities, tooth decay can cause substantial damage to the natural tooth structure. Cavities are formed due to poor oral hygiene habits, during which acids on the teeth eat away at the natural tooth enamel. This may cause patients to experience sensitivity to sweets or even warm or cold beverages. This is often an indication that a cavity is present. If patients choose not to have their condition evaluated as soon as they experience the symptoms of a cavity, they may be putting their smile at risk. Cavities that go deep into the tooth can cause an infection of the dental pulp inside of the tooth and result in the need for root canal therapy.
